Applications Now Open: Ottawa Youth Week 2026 Leadership Competitions

Brought to you by

Ottawa’s next generation of leaders — this is your moment.
Youth Ottawa is proud to announce that applications are now officially open for the Mayor 4 A Day and CEO 4 A Day leadership competitions as part of Ottawa Youth Week 2026.

This year, secondary school–aged youth from across Ottawa and Gatineau are invited to apply for an exclusive opportunity to spend a full day shadowing some of the most influential leaders in our region.

These are not symbolic experiences. They are immersive, competitive, and transformational.

2026 Leadership Opportunities

In 2026, participating leaders include:

Mayor 4 A Day

    • Mark Sutcliffe – Mayor, City of Ottawa

CEO 4 A Day

    • Cyril Leeder – President & CEO, Ottawa Senators
    • Stéphane Giguère – CEO, Ottawa Community Housing
    • Mark Goudie – President & CEO, Ottawa Sports & Entertainment Group
    • Rachael Wilson – CEO, United Way East Ontario
    • Birket Foster – Investor & CEO, Storm Internet
    • Sueling Ching – President & CEO, Ottawa Board of Trade
    • John Liptak – President & CEO, Oakwood
    • Darin McCorriston – Founder & CEO, TMSI

Each selected student will gain behind-the-scenes access to decision-making, leadership strategy, and the real-world challenges facing our city’s civic, sport, non-profit, and business sectors.

How the Competition Works

High school students submit a short application explaining:

    • Why they want to participate
    • What leadership means to them
    • Which leader they are applying to shadow

Applicants must demonstrate curiosity, initiative, and a willingness to step outside their comfort zone. The process is competitive. Only one student is selected per leadership opportunity.

Why It Matters

Since launching Mayor 4 A Day in 2017, Youth Ottawa has seen the long-term impact of this experience. Participants often go on to deepen their civic engagement, join volunteer boards and committees, pursue leadership roles, and build meaningful community connections.

Last year’s participants described the experience as eye-opening, motivating, and confidence-building — a turning point in how they saw themselves as leaders in the city.

Ottawa Youth Week aligns with celebrations happening in major cities such as Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton, and connects Ottawa youth to a broader national and global movement recognizing youth voice and leadership.

This Is Your Launchpad

Opportunities like this don’t come often. You don’t need to have perfect grades. You don’t need to have a long resume. You need drive, curiosity, and the courage to apply.

If you’re ready to step into leadership and see the city from a new perspective, we encourage you to apply.

Applications are now open. Spots are limited.

Apply today and take your place at the table.

A note from a Youth Ottawa Board Member / Planner for this year’s Youth Ottawa Events

2025 was an incredible year for Youth Ottawa! After joining the board in early January and discovering the need for event planning assistance with the year’s Sponsored events, I was honoured to step-in and help the team with the Mayor’s Golf Tournament and the 21 Under 21 Awards Gala. The changes in funding added the additional challenge of keeping an already small event budget as tight as possible, so I called upon all my vendor contacts to keep costs down, while still creating exceptional and elevated events. Overall, we spent less, raised the bar, and created a fantastic blueprint for the years to come. Neither of these events would have been possible without our Sponsors and the teams behind the scenes.

Last year was our first year hosting the Mayor’s Annual Golf Tournament at the Meadows Golf and Country Club, and we are so excited to work with their team again. With four nine-hole courses and a large reception room for dinner, we can significantly expand this tournament this year – get your team signed up now! The day kicked off with a welcome from CHEZ 106.1 morning show co-hosts Chris and Jamie from The Biggs & Barr Show, and a welcome from Mayor Mark Sutcliffe officially opening the 26th Annual Tournament. Throughout the day we ran a raffle with prizes from the Ottawa Senators, The Ottawa Black Jacks, Rugby Canada, Le Germain Hotels, Holiday Inn & Suites Kanata, The Meadows Golf and Country Club, and Yuk Yuk’s care of our gracious evening MC, Dylan Black. Mood Moss Flowers provided gorgeous golf-themed centrepieces, which acted as an additional gift to guests at the end of the evening. As always, our deepest gratitude to our phenomenal Sponsors for the day (we can’t wait to welcome you back this year):

The Grand Hall of the Museum of History served as the Gala’s new backdrop for 2025 – a phenomenal space that only requires small touches to complete the Celebration’s atmosphere. Mood Moss Flowers also participated in the Gala, enhancing the space with flawless centrepieces highlighting our sponsors on each table. With our Mocktail Hour sponsored by Holiday Inn & Suites Kanata, and Dinner Sponsored by Carleton University, we worked with My Catering Group, the fantastic private business currently responsible for in-house catering at the museum, to build an exquisitely customized menu for our guests which included a welcome Mocktail, canapés, and a three-course meal with wine for all guests. “From humble beginnings in 2012, founder [and 40-under 40 award winner] Derick Cotnam’s Stittsville home to one of Ottawa’s largest catering operations, My Catering Group is proud to be one of the city’s first choices for exceptional events” and for good reason: the meal was phenomenal!

Finally, the awards, bursaries, and 2025 21 Under 21 Gala would not be possible without our incredible sponsors:

It is with deepest gratitude to everyone mentioned for their commitment, dedication, support and overall devotion to empowering the Youth of Ottawa—we are appreciative and humbled by your contributions and very much look forward to working with each of you in 2026, and the years to come!

This is the second year that the 21 under 21 awards (formerly the Spirit of the Capital awards) incorporated a Gala dinner, and we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge the hard work of our partners who got the ball rolling last year: ITM Events created a wonderful atmosphere at the Rogers Center in downtown Ottawa with the help of Avant-Garde Designs décor. A massive shout-out to Enchanted Photo Booth for their participation in the 2024 Gala—they offered a 360-degree photo booth, and it was a huge hit—we are so grateful for their participation and are excited to find an opportunity to work with them again in the future!

Introducing Youth Ottawa’s 2025 Gratitude & Impact Report

From Band-Aids to Blueprints: Youth Ottawa’s 2025 Gratitude & Impact Report

As we close out another remarkable year, we’re proud to share Youth Ottawa’s 2025 Gratitude & Impact Report—a transparent look at what our community of youth, partners, educators, and supporters accomplished together.

2025 marked Youth Ottawa’s 28th year of service to the city. It was a year of growth, adaptation, and renewed clarity about the role young people play in shaping Ottawa’s present and future. From the expansion of the Ottawa Youth Council, to city-wide youth engagement during National Youth Week, to the launch of new youth-led initiatives and social enterprises, this year demonstrated what’s possible when youth are trusted and supported.

Our Gratitude & Impact Report is first and foremost a thank you. It recognizes:

  • The young people who stepped forward with ideas, leadership, and courage

  • The educators, community leaders, and businesses who opened doors and made space

  • The partners and supporters who invested in long-term impact, not short-term fixes

It also reflects our belief that youth empowerment is not charity—it’s infrastructure for a healthier, more connected city.

Inside the report, you’ll find:

  • Clear, transparent impact data from 2025

  • Highlights from the Ottawa Youth Council, Untapped, National Youth Week, Youth Active Media, and more

  • An overview of our new social enterprise, Trivia 4 Teams / Trivia 4 Tomorrow, and how businesses are aligning culture with community impact

  • A look ahead to how we’re building toward 2026

To everyone who walked alongside us this year—thank you. We’re grateful for your trust, your partnership, and your belief in Ottawa’s youth.
